Here is our continuing coverage of last Saturday night’s All-Female Tribute Band Benefit Concert at the Dakota Music Lounge in Santa Monica. Three fantastic, all-female tribute bands shared the stage to raise money and awareness for CATS: Center for Assault Treatment Services — Lynette Skynyrd, Allison Chains and Lady Zep. Today’s focus is on the amazing and electric Lady Zep — an all-female tribute to the legendary super-group Led Zeppelin, arguably the greatest rock band the world has ever known (and my personal all-time favorite!)
You’d think l’d be biased in favor of Lady Zep because of my affection for the original Led Zep—Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Henry Bonham—but I knew these ladies had some huge shoes to fill. I know every lyric, every chord, every nuance of the entire LZ catalog, and I’m proud to say that Lady Zep was right on target!
Lead singer Melissa Jane possesses an amazing set of pipes to capture everything from quiet sensual intimacy to the raucous sexual wails of Robert Plant. Guitarist Marija played note-perfect of all the hits, even adopting Jimmy Page’s signature use of a violin bow on her gorgeous Les Paul electric guitar.
Highlight of the evening: Marija’s trippy, shaman-like conjuration of mystical sounds on an electronic instrument called a Theremin. Bassist Miiko and drummer Leanne made up the airtight rhythm section, with both artists showing their extensive range of talent during remarkable solos.
The whole band connected so much with the audience; in fact, Melissa jumped off the stage and joined the audience for several songs in the set. All in all, it was a fantastic evening of great music– we are deeply grateful to the members of Lynette Skynyrd, Allison Chains and Lady Zep for helping us raise over $2,000 in donations for a great cause!
